Privacy Policy
Effective date: October 4, 2026
Memo Keeper (记着呢) does not collect any of your personal information. It has no servers, no accounts, and no analytics, advertising or crash-reporting tools. Your notes stay on your iPhone; if you turn on iCloud Backup in Memo Keeper, they are backed up to your own iCloud.
Information stored on your device
The following stays on your iPhone. We cannot see it and it is never sent to us. Deleting Memo Keeper deletes it:
- Notes: text, images, reminders, version history, folders and tags. Deleted notes go to the Trash and are removed for good after 90 days.
- Daily snapshots: one copy of all notes per day, the latest 30 kept, for recovering from mistakes.
- Private folders: notes and images inside are encrypted with Apple’s built-in encryption (CryptoKit) on the device, in daily snapshots and in iCloud, and open with Face ID or the device passcode. The key is kept in the device’s keychain and, with iCloud Keychain on, follows you to your other Apple devices. Only you hold the recovery code; we keep no copy, so if both the key and the recovery code are lost, nobody can open these notes.
- Widget summary: today’s reminders and pinned notes, kept in storage shared between the app and its widgets, read only by widgets, the Lock Screen and Siri on this iPhone. Notes in private folders are not included, and their reminders show only “Private reminder”.
- Settings and choices: sort order, dismissed tips, whether iCloud Backup is on, and whether you bought Pro are stored on the device.
Your iPhone’s own backups (the iPhone’s iCloud Backup, or backups to a computer) include this information; notes in private folders stay encrypted in backups.
iCloud Backup in Memo Keeper
Off by default; it backs up only after you turn it on in Data Safety. Notes are then backed up to your own private iCloud database, readable only by devices signed in to the same Apple Account; in mainland China, iCloud is operated by GCBD (Guizhou-Cloud Big Data). Note text, reminders, folder names and text recognized in images are encrypted before they are stored there, and we have no way to see what is in your iCloud. Turning the backup off never removes a note from this iPhone.
Who Memo Keeper communicates with
- Apple iCloud: only while iCloud Backup is on in Memo Keeper, to your own iCloud.
- Apple’s App Store: when you tap “Get Pro”, “Restore Purchases” or “Redeem Code” on the Pro page; after that, a check at each launch so Family Sharing and refunds come through. Transactions are handled by Apple; we never receive your payment information.
Apart from this, Memo Keeper does not go online. The “Terms of Use” and “Support” links open Apple’s standard license agreement and this website in Safari.
Voice, photos, the clipboard and texts
- Speech to text (Tap to Talk and dictating while editing): speech is transcribed on the device and is never uploaded. Memo Keeper uses on-device recognition only. From iOS 26 it uses Apple’s new speech recognition; if its speech model is not on the iPhone yet, iOS downloads it from Apple (the same model the built-in apps use), and your speech is still processed on the device. On earlier iOS versions it uses dictation, and if Chinese dictation has not been downloaded yet, it asks you to turn it on in Settings rather than sending audio elsewhere. The system’s speech-recognition permission prompt includes Apple’s general note that speech data is sent to Apple; with on-device recognition, the recording never leaves the iPhone.
- Original audio (from 1.3): notes you make by talking on the main screen keep the original audio, so you can open the note and play it back. The audio is stored only on this iPhone, is never uploaded and is not part of Memo Keeper’s iCloud Backup; in private notes it is encrypted like the text. You can delete it from the note. After a note is permanently deleted, its audio is kept for 35 more days (like images, so a note recovered from a daily snapshot still has it) and then deleted. Dictating inside a note only turns speech into text and keeps no audio; imported recordings are deleted once transcribed.
- Recorded alarm sound (from 1.2): a line you record for an alarm reminder is kept on this iPhone and used only as its alarm sound. It is never uploaded, is not part of Memo Keeper’s iCloud Backup, and is deleted along with the reminder.
- Text in photos: text in photos and screenshots is recognized on the device with iOS’s built-in text recognition.
- Clipboard: when you return to the home screen, Memo Keeper only checks whether new text was copied, without reading it; it reads the clipboard only when you tap Paste.
- Pickup texts (from 1.2): Memo Keeper cannot read your messages. Only if you set up the “Save Pickup Code” automation in Shortcuts does Shortcuts hand a text to Memo Keeper when it arrives. Memo Keeper reads it on the device and saves it as a note if it finds a pickup code; otherwise nothing is kept.
Sharing, export and import
Share as image, share text, Export All and importing from Apple Notes all use the system share sheet and the Files app, so you decide where things go. Exported Markdown files are not encrypted, and a note that keeps its original audio gets an .m4a file with the same name next to it; exporting private notes requires Face ID first. The Memo Keeper share extension only hands what you share to Memo Keeper and does not go online.
Permissions
- Camera: to take photos and scan whiteboards and receipts into notes, reading the text on the device.
- Photos (add only): to save images from notes and long images to your library. Memo Keeper never reads other photos.
- Microphone and Speech Recognition: for Tap to Talk and dictating while editing, transcribed on the device (notes made on the main screen also keep the original audio on the device), and for recording a line as an alarm sound.
- Notifications: to remind you on time. “Important” reminders are Time Sensitive and appear even with a Focus on.
- Alarms (iOS 26): asked only when you make a reminder a “Strong reminder”, which rings like an alarm.
- Face ID: only to open private folders. iOS does the check; we never receive your face data.
- Wireless Data (iPhones sold in mainland China): for iCloud Backup and the App Store.
Memo Keeper does not ask for location, contacts or photo library read access. Every permission is requested the first time it is needed, and declining any of them does not stop you from writing notes.
Children
We do not collect personal information from anyone, including children.
Changes
If this policy changes, we will update this page and the effective date above. If a future version needs to go online for anything else, it will be written here and in the release notes first.
